Exciting new waterfront project will be safe haven for teens

Baptist Church Plans 004

June 19, 2012

EXCLUSIVE:

DUNOON’S Baptist Church Centre is set to be dramatically transformed into a state-of-the-art youth café bar and conference centre with quality hotel-style accommodation.

Council planners have given the green light to an exciting project which will see the existing building completely revamped and an eyesore gap between it and the Riverside Swim and Health Centre filled with a brand new glass-fronted structure.

In an exclusive interview with CowalCourier.com, one of the Baptist Church leaders behind the plan said: “The vision for the development lay in a desire to create a safe meeting place for the teenagers in the town in addition to existing facilities.

“The rest of the project has grown up around that central aim. The planning and discussions have taken nearly ten years to reach this point and the church members are delighted that permission has been granted.”

Looks like the Church is much more forward looking than some other organisations. A facility for teenagers is badly needed and Dunoon does not really have any conference facilities other than the Queens hall.

Church and forward thinking? Never thought I’d hear these two words together. Ulterior motive, recruitment opportunity, get them young while they are susceptible springs to mind. Areas throughout Cowal, including Dunoon, badly need to give the young people somewhere to congregate, mix and have fun. This proposition looks to do just that, shame it has this religious connection.

What a lot of nonsense saying its a pity about the religious content. I go to SEASONS, the existing coffee shop at the moment. My cousin introduced me to it. It serves fantastic coffee and home bakes. People come and have good blether there. There are NEVER any connotations to religion. The coffee shop is open every evening so that young people can have a cola or a coffee. But then you always get someone like yoursel to put a DAMPER on things. Take it from your comments you won’t be partaking of coffe or anything else there.

      • Jnr Tick says:

Correct Rita, I won’t be funding this cafe and its beliefs. I take it you are not in agreement with my comments, such a shame you could not come on this forum and be a little less dismissive of other peoples opinions. A better way to counter my argument would be to attempt to justify why cafes or meeting places for the young cannot be opened without the religious aspect. I know you say that people come and go from the existing cafe without encountering any subtle brainwashing normally applied when entering any of God’s establishments. However, by entering and handing over cash, this funds their church enabling them to spread their version as well I might add, to also put these funds to good use by providing these facilities for the young. I’m not completely against what they are making available or soon to provide just always very sceptical about religious organisations intentions. Incidently, glad you find the coffee and home baking to your liking, we’re quite lucky here in Cowal having several similar places.

Jnr Tick, you have not got a clue what you are talking about. While “Seasons” may be in the Baptist church there is NO religion of any kind rammed down anybodies throat. You can go in any time for a coffe or cake and leave without feeling in the least bit redeemed. Don’t knock someone trying to improve the environment and amenities of Dunoon until you have had the guts to give it a go first, and no I am not a religious zealot before you reply!
