PHONE fraudsters could be set to target Cowal residents in a bid to obtain victims’ bank details, according to local police.

Scammers are using a call divert trick to dupe people into thinking that they are genuine bank employees.

Inspector David Armstrong of Dunoon Police explained: “Victims are telephoned by a person pretending to work for the bank.

“They ask that the victim calls them back on the bank’s helpline number in order to verify that the caller is genuine.

“But the caller does not hang up, and remains on the line hoping to obtain the victim’s bank account and password details when they are entered via the bank’s automated service.”
